Every year, automotive manufacturers issue recalls - situations where they have identified safety-related issues - such as mechanical, electrical, software, etc. They contact dealers and whenever possible, owners so that the issues can be repaired, usually free of charge. In 2015, the number of automotive recalls topped 83,000,000.

These recalls arent just for vehicles under warranty. They can apply to vehicles ten years old and over that amount of time, the vehicle may have changed hands one or more times and the manufacturer has no way to reach the current owner.
